Learning at Home

Every moment of your child’s life is a learning opportunity, whether formal or informal. As a parent you can help your child to learn and develop in many ways. Here are some ideas:

  • Keep in contact with your child’s teacher, via the Home School diary, by attending parents’ evenings and coming to the workshops and events we hold.
  • Try to work on the same goals or targets in school and at home, especially communication targets
  • Practice the targets, but in a different way, for example, if your child is learning about numbers at school, then at home, practice counting up the stairs, looking at numbers on doors, price labels, cars
  • Help your child to develop lifelong skills for example, helping with shopping, writing a shopping list, finding the items in the shop, helping to cook dinner or helping to make a snack
  • Following therapy programmes from your child’s therapists
  • Keeping active – by walking, going swimming, playing ball, bouncing on the trampoline

For Lower School pupils:

  • Talk to your child about the environment, where you are going, how you are going to get there
  • Read/sing to your child
  • Encourage your child to help with dressing, washing, teeth cleaning
  • Provide access to sensory play and messy play

For Upper School pupils:

  • Where possible, encourage your child to take responsibility for their belongings
  • Support your child to access short breaks – time away from the family to be with other pupils with similar needs
  • Make use of the community facilities, eg Acacia Adventure Playground, Diamond Riding Centre, Autism friendly cinema screenings at Wimbledon Odeon
  • Talk to your child about the technologies they use and how they can keep safe when doing so
