Communication

Communication is central to our approach and key to our provision at Perseid, in order to support the development of pupils’ communication skills.

At Perseid, we believe that every child is entitled to be heard, and we are fully committed to ensuring that our pupils have every opportunity to communicate, whether it be through their voice, no tech (e.g. body language, facial expression, signing), low tech (e.g. PECS, PODD), or high tech devices (e.g. iPads, VOCAs, eye gaze systems).

Throughout the day, pupils are taught and encouraged to interact, share attention, enjoy each other’s company, and develop their social and communication skills at whatever level they are working.

In partnership with our team of Local Authority Speech and Language Therapists (SaLTs), pupils are supported using a Total Communication approach, embedded within the curriculum, which utilises a range of strategies to support their individual communication needs, including Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) strategies to empower them to communicate effectively and confidently in all areas of life.
