SALT Provision

Our team of specialist speech and language therapists work with all pupils in order to develop their communication skills including attention and listening, receptive language (understanding), expressive language (talking/ symbol use) and social communication skills. The speech and language therapists are based on site in order to provide an integrated approach to therapy and ensure the best outcomes for our pupils.

The SALT team work closely with teaching staff and the other therapy teams in order to embed communication goals in all areas of learning throughout the school day. Each pupil has an allocated speech and language therapist who provides therapy according to the provision outlined in their EHCP. We support pupils in the following ways:

  • Working directly with students during therapy sessions (these may be one to one, paired, small group or whole class sessions).
  • Working indirectly to support school staff to carry out therapy programmes, support communication needs throughout the day and ensure a communication friendly environment.
  • Providing training to school staff and families.

Many of the pupils at Perseid require some form of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) system to help them to communicate. Our speech and language therapists support a total communication approach and have experience in a wide range of AAC systems including signing, Aided Language Displays, core vocabulary boards, PECS, communication books, objects of reference, switches, eye gaze software and iPads with voice output software. We work closely with AAC hubs at Great Ormond Street, the Compass centre and CENMAC in order to support the use of these technologies.

Our aim is to support students to access their learning to the best of their ability, communicate with others, make friends and develop their independence in school, at home and in the community.
