May 2025: Martha Davies, Aladdin KS4 Performance

The Upper School production is taking place the week before half term on the 21st of May, but pupils across Upper School had a sneak peek of the tech run on the 20th, and Lower School pupils exactly travelled to the Upper Campus on the 22nd for their own exclusive show.

Year 11 pupils have shone this year, showcasing their progression in skills and confidence since last year’s production. They have all enjoyed the choreography of dances, practicing songs and writing their own lines. Many have chosen their own costumes and proudly wear these.

Matisse Class have made up the main cast of the show but the pupils of Calder Department, in Year 10 and 11 have been involved in parts which staff feel they enjoy and impacts them positively, with major roles including Aladdin is played by Year 11 Hassan, Jasmine Year 10 Angel, Jafar Year 11 Danny, Genie Year 11 David and the Sultan by Year 10 Harris.

Many costumes are of traditional Indian heritage- but pupils have freely chosen from a wide selection which items they would like to wear, to enable pupil voice and supports choice making which all stands as evidence for their accreditation. All pupils involved will receive an award for Drama.

Some costumes and props were hard to source but staff have been extremely supportive and it’s been a real team effort. I am so proud of the team, wider school and all those who do not usually take part in Drama but have supported the KS4 team. The props I must say, are west end material!

For me, there have been many highlights: Calder scene 2&5- I lead the department so to see pupils cope with sitting on set, engaged and enjoying the production makes all the stress and sleepless nights of leading drama well worth it!

The progression of year 11 students has been immense. I’ve also been incredibly proud of the progression shown by our Year 11 students — their growth in confidence, performance skills, and teamwork throughout the process has been immense. Perhaps most importantly, it’s been wonderful to witness the positive impact this experience had on all pupils’ emotional wellbeing. To see their enthusiasm, pure happiness, and sense of achievement from exploring drama in a safe, supportive environment has been a reminder of why these opportunities matter so much.
